I find news that artists can use themselves to help further their own careers like this month I found a gallery website in the UK that offers artists free webspace and I present it beautifully! Now that's fantastic!
"My art has a simple message: see the individual through color and light. by doing so, one's individuality can be more fully understood," states Olan, "and giving people information to better their own self esteem through beauty advice is a natural progression - you know, my own art is about the beauty of the individual."

Olan is known for taking the overlooked and making it more obvious. A project by Olan in July 2003 involved the artist creating works of local bank tellers at Chase Manhattan in New York. The New York Times published in an article entitled "Tellers in Tangerine. Thanks to an Artist's Loving Homage, Bank Workers Find a Wall of Their Own" by Laurel Gross. The article was about how Olan created the art to honor the workers. In fact, Olan addresses an idea of his for hiring local artists to create art for these corporate institutions on his sitepage Tellers in the Times.

Excerpt from NY Times article:

"They're just wonderful people. But people forget, because they go to the bank and just do their thing, and sometimes they have to wait in line, and they talk down to them. Or they talk a certain way where they don't see the person as an individual."

He said he noticed a complete change in attitude toward these women when the pictures were installed: "People saw them, you know because they looked." - New York Times 2003

Olan describes bank tellers project today, "The odd thing was, I never realized the obvious while creating it. That hanging a painting of someone behind themselves where they had to stand all day would create such an wonderful reaction. That art of the hard working individual at the counter could bring humanity to the everyday corporate world. People would respond with joy and enthusiasm at just seeing the works. Works that addressed the people in them as well as the viewer. That environment complete, spoke to everyone who came to bank."

The well being of artists is very important to Olan as well, who states the internet is reshaping the way people buy and sell art. "Artists are already able to reach all corners of the globe cultivating their own collectors and patrons directly via the Internet. I'm simply expanding the scope of things by sharing news I find that might be of interest to artists."

Art News, on the homepage, is devoted to any information Olan finds that might be of use to his site patrons. Current articles include "Your insurance provider please-sir, why NY Artists should check out Healthy NY" and "For the LOVE of Nonprofit, Ward-Nasse Gallery."

Beauty information on the site includes LIPSTICK Reportage, is a visual presentation by Olan of current designer cosmetic items on the market by companies like Bobbi Brown, Armani, Benefit and MAC. Other beauty items on the site include professional make-up secrets from Olan along with fashion and beauty pages from layouts directed by the artist for MAR magazine. This is an effort by Olan to reach out to young people by presenting art on the web in a way that makes it interesting and informative.

"Today I heard a girl discuss an actress and she described her by her make-up stating it was 'phenominal.' Now thats an exchange about something she saw in someone else that she will hopefully be able to incorporate into her own self esteem. I know I can give her that," states Olan, who has also worked in fashion for over 20 years with a long list of art and fashion photgraphers including the late Francesco Scavullo and Robert Mapplethorpe.

"Llife is about sharing with one another, picking up things we like from one another and growing - now thats a better world." adds the artist.

One can also shop for Olan's work while reading art reviews about Olan and viewing his recent works of art including a cover of MAR Magazine featuring actress Anne Hathaway.

Olan's most recent show 'Metamorphosis' included 48x48x1.5 paintings of such notables as Anne Hathaway, Courtney Love, Kelly Osbourne, RuPaul, Drag performers Lady Bunny and Lipsynka, supermodels Linda Evangelista, Erin Wasson and Stephanie Seymour, Singer Boy George along with works of television and news personailites, homeless and working women, transsexuals, female impersonators, androgynous males and even mythical mermaids.

Olan's technique involves creating from his own own photos of subjects through digital art combined with hand-painting on canvas. However some are hand-painted from start to finish to honor his mother Eslye's painting techniques.

Olan quotes late eighteenth century writer Haldane Macfall when explaining his desire to reach all facets of society with his art, "I say that the ordinary man who comes before a painting, frankly and generously ready to yield himself up to the impression that the artist has sought to arouse in his senses through his vision, will feel the significance of that art much more purely and fully than the critic who has set up for himself an elaborate code of laws founded on the achievement of one or two great masters, which the standard he applies to every work of art in a calculated and death-dealing manner which destroys his capacity to receive its real significance." - Haldane Macfall

"My mother recently said, 'The Arts are the universal language..they can heal a soul and nations.' So I'm going to let my art call out to every individual on the web nation as a beacon to let everyone know it is there for their own inspiration, pleasure and enjoyment," adds Olan.
