New York, NY (Issues Wire / PRWEB) March 13, 2008 -- The Spring Collaborative Communications Summit: Transforming Healthcare through Health Information Technology will take place May 5-7, 2008, at the Mandarin Oriental Washington D.C. (www.collaborativecommunicationssummit.com)

One of the most anticipated panel sessions at the Spring CCS HIT explores secondary uses of data and how HIT is being incorporated into operational workflow. The esteemed participants of this panel include: William A. Fera, M.D., Director of Medical IT Software/Solutions, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; Leslie Lenert, MD, MS, Director, National Center for Public Health Informatics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Jonah Frohlich, MPH, Senior Program Officer, California HealthCare Foundation; and Charles Safran, MD, FACP, FACMI, Chief Division of Clinical Computing BIDMC and Senior Scientist, Harvard Medical School and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The panel is being moderated by John Murphy, who is an Executive Advisor for Booz Allen Hamilton.

The distinguished group of panelists will discuss how the secondary use of data is critical for a health care system to achieve high levels of quality and performance, helping to improve public health and safety. And, being able to leverage secondary data with HIT is even more effective in providing better patient care and improving business processes.

"Using interoperability has already enabled our EDs and other environments to look beyond the discrete patient record, dramatically impacting the care we deliver," said William A. Fera, MD, Director of Medical IT Software/Solutions, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "I look forward to sharing our experience at the conference as well as to learning from other organizations' knowledge and experience."

The panel will make suggestions on how an organization can establish a strategy to leverage this information and what it may mean to an organization's patients. In doing so, the group will uncover how organizations have and are currently successful in using this data, and they will also touch upon benefits for the future.

"Data can be used to improve clinician effectiveness," said Jonah Frohlich, senior program officer for the California HealthCare Foundation. "It can also help identify better practices that lead to better clinical outcomes."

The session - Secondary Use of Data and HIT - is set to take place Monday, May 5, at 11:15 a.m.
