GSA Chief Commends Firefighter, Shelter Manufacturers

New Fire Shelter Saved Lives During Raging Forest Fires

Los Angeles (Issues Wire / Vocus) April 24, 2008 -- Lurita Doan, Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), today commended a U.S. Forest Service firefighter and the small businesses that produce the emergency shelters that saved his life last summer.

GSA’s success in fulfilling its mission hinges on the reliability and resourcefulness of its industry partners
“This is a wonderful story,” Administrator Doan said during a press conference at the 2008 GSA Expo. “A firefighter was trapped and used a GSA-supplied portable shelter to save himself. We’re here to credit Grant Gifford for his bravery and ingenuity, and the manufacturers whose product delivered precisely as promised.”

Gifford, a ''hot-shot captain,'' used the shelter when an out-of-control blaze engulfed him and another firefighter during last summer’s extreme wildland fires. Gifford was on hand to tell his story and demonstrate how to operate the shelter.

Doan presented certificates to Gifford and to the two manufacturers, Weckworth-Langdon Manufacturing of Wichita, Kan., and Anchor Industries of Evansville, Ind.

“GSA’s success in fulfilling its mission hinges on the reliability and resourcefulness of its industry partners,” Doan said. “That relationship is never more important than during times of national emergency.”

GSA provides a centralized delivery system of products and services to the federal government, leveraging its enormous buying power to get the best value for taxpayers.

  • Founded in 1949, GSA manages more than one-fourth of the government’s total procurement dollars and influences the management of $500 billion in federal assets, including 8,600 government-owned or leased buildings and 208,000 vehicles.
  • GSA helps preserve our past and define our future, as a steward of more than 425 historic properties, and as manager of USA.gov, the official portal to federal government information and services.
  • GSA’s mission to provide superior workplaces, expert technology solutions, acquisition services, purchasing and E-Gov travel solutions and management policies, at best value, allows federal agencies to focus on their core missions.

Did You Know? GSA is a national leader Logistics Management and Resource Support. GSA supports federal agencies and state, tribal and local governments that need resource support prior to, during, and/or after incidents requiring federal response.
